2nd, Wensday.
Got up at four oclock. Found the brigade about one hundred yards from the train.
Issued one days coffee, sugar, hard bread and slat. Got through by six oclook and about
half past six we started back. The troops kept along side of the wagon train.
Marched very fast. Three wagons were taken from each brigade to go in the rear of
the troops to carry the sick. Passed through Culpepper about three oclock. My train
was full of Negroes that came back with us. Got in camp about six oclock. The men
did not get in until nearly eight. Issued a full ration of whiskey to them as soon
as they got in. Found a letter and a paper from home .and a letter from Uncle
Sam waiting me in camp. Saw Hand in the 1st Cavalry.
