Monday 29th.
Clear and pleasant today. About 9 oclock got orders to go out and issue one day's
coffee, sugar, hard bread, and slat. Crossed the river by fording and got safe to Madison Court
House which is a very nice little place. The general headquarters are in the court
house. Capt. Cooke went with us and showed us where the regiments was. Just on the
outer edge of the town. Took the wagons and issued to each regiment. Quartermaster
Cooke was in charge of the train. I tended to the officer sales alone. They amounted
to nearly one hundred dollars. Got back about five oclock. Heard some cannonading
while issuing, in the direction of Charlottesvile or Gordonsville.
