January, 1864 1st, Friday. Clear and pleasant until afternoon when it suddenly grew very cold and froze up the mud which is awful. The fourth Regt started for home today. Had Roast turkey and chicken for dinner. In the afternoon went to the Regiment. Issued whiskey to the Brigade. Not much business done today. This is a very dull New Years. There is a good deal of whiskey floating around and most of the fellows are jolly good and tight.
