May 19 Friday
Moved at six a.m. passed through the city and crossed the Appomattox took the turnpike for Manchester where we arrived about one o'clock p.m. The troops camped about two miles from the town. the trains with 1/2 a mile. We came through five lines of earth works today. I stopped with my two wagons at Div. Hd Q's was down to Manchester not much of a place[.] Can see Richmond & the Rebel capitol also a portion of the city that was burned[.] Saw Fort Darling as we came along the r oad[.] Cloudy most of the day but very hot. No rain.
