May 18 Thursday
Clear and very warm. Started about 5 a.m. followed the 3rd Brigade until noon when the troops stopped for dinner and the train came ahead. The postmaster and myself rode ahead and got in Petersburg about four p.m. Capt. Fitts & Major Finney were there. The General and staff came in soon after. The train parked on the edge of town[.] The owner of my horse (a citizen) came today and claimed it but did not get it. Had dinner at a farm house 7 1/2 miles from town plenty of cherries. Issued one days pork. There was a light shower this afternoon.
