April 9 Sunday
Clear and pleasant started about seven o'clock moved very slow. About three o'clock this afternoon the ammunition was turned back news that Genl Lee had surrendered. When it was officially announced everybody seemed crazy. Such demonstration of joy I never saw. Firing of cannons shouting throwing up hats and so on. I picked up a new wall tent ( rebel) and a sword also a rebel Regulation there was some heavy cannonading this morning.
