21st Sunday.
We still lay near Fairfax about two miles from the court house on the [blank] turnpike the fifteenth is on inspection by Col Penrose he now having command of the regiment. There is heavy firing in the direction of Thouroughfare Gap a great lot of cavelry [sic] are going out that way. There was a mounted brass band passed here today. They played as they went by. It was the first one that i ever saw. Belonged to the first Rhode Island Cavelry Supply train went out today brought Sugar coffee and hams Issued one days rations of fresh meat coffee sugar and hard bread. Bought a gold pen with silver extension case for three dollars
