May 4th Monday
Between the time that Capt Fitts left the brigade and dark last night they had a very hard fight they overtook the rebels who fought with desperation; Our Brigade was all cut to peices [sic]. about daylight this morning the rebels commenced to shell our troops. It appears that during the night the rebs was reinforced by : Longstreet: and had got in the rear of our men the fight was very severe and seemed to be against our men from the heights where we was we could see the whole line about ten AM the train moved back on top of the hill behind falmouth station. hear the [illegible] of the [illegible] house. About an hour before dark a terriffic [sic] battle of Artillery and
