2nd Saturday
went to the river with four wagon and one days rations. Just as we got on the bank the rebs commenced to shell two shells striking the ground very close to where we was. It was two hours before we got across. We finnally [sic] got across and issued one days rations: hard Bread Pork sugar and coffee. got back all night had quartermaster Reeds spy glass. could see a rebel ammunition train coming down the hills could not see a great many rebels. very warm all day. heavy firing on the right and left. our pickets are keeping up a continual firing Wrote a letter to Mother. About dark our picket advanced up to the hights [sic] and after
