Jan 23rd Friday
this morning it cleared off. went about one mile to the wagon train after rations drew to days rations. The wagon train could not get any closer than the [sic] was. They had eight horses to a wagon I saw the artillery going back with ten and twelve horses and then they could hardly get a long. In the afternoon Co. D and I was detailed for fatigue. went near the river bank and hauled pontoons and wagons out of sight of the rebels. they was in shelling distance after we came in we drew whiskey rations some of the men bought rations and got very drunk I sold mine for five cents
