was coming in we was shelled by the rebels. their shells burst just over our heads but did not hurt anyone. we was ordered to lay down flat on the ground and go off in squads of six and eight we went off in this way and laid down along a rail fence about two hundred yards from the barn and near the four small houses that was in a row. there we laid untill [sic] almost dark when Co I was detailed to go the river and get two days rations for the regiment – we did not get back untill [sic] after dark while we was after the rations the left wing was engaged and the sergeant-‐major, John P. Fowler was killed he was struck in the hip with a rifle ball and bled to death. Capt. Slater of Co. G was shot in
