24th Friday
It is very dusty. The heat is intense almost melting. Went to the front and issued two days like rations. One day soft bread two of dried apples. ____ formerly _____ of the 1st Regt went up with ____ our division. Has fell back about 500 yards and ____ building rifle ____. They have orders to put up their ____ and they will stay two or three days. Got back to port about 9:00 PM. Am very tired. Just at dusk there was very heavy cannonading in front of Petersburg.
