clear and very pleasant but awful dull heavy cannonading all day. NQ reports from the front Received a letter from Wm. Tewey (?) Later Reports from the front (1.) say that we are driving the enemy capturing prisoner(s) and artillery. Gen'l Russell (2.) killed. and Genl. Upton (3.) badly wounded Transcriber's Notes:
1. Third Battle of Winchester
or Opequon Creek, Virginia.
Costly but successful attack
by Sheridan against Early.
2. David Allen Russell, born 1820, "killed
instantly by a shell fragment which
tore through his heart." Source:

3 Emory Upton, (1839-1881), who after
being wounded, "maintained command
while being carried about on a
stretcher." Source: Generals In Blue,
