21st Sunday
cloudy most of the day. No rain __ _ about noon cannonading commenced. Learned that the rebels have attacked our lines (1) our brigade is on the front line of battle the wagons all came in from the front the train was all harned (2) and ready to move. It is thought that we will go across the river. had to move the U.S. 2nd (Regiment Cavalry) off the hill to let the batteries and supports get position. Drew Commipany (sic) property 7 stores

1. A two-pronged attack against Sheridan by Early and R.H. Anderson failed because of lack of coordination. (The Civil War Day By Day An Almanac 1861-1865 p. 558.)
2. Possibly "harned", a hame being a part of a harness fitting around an animal's neck and to which traces are attached.
