March 31 Friday
Cloudy and some rain in the morning but clear and pleasant in the afternoon. Heavy firing near Fort Fisher in the morning was awakened at half past two this morning. Got ready to move but the order was countermanded so we went to bed again. Issued rations to the detachments at their headquarters today. Reports say that our forces have cut the south side railroad and that General Ords corps have whipped the enemy badly.
