March 29 Wednesday
Clear most of the day About half past ten tonight the enemy attacked our right beyond the Appomatox river for two or three hours the shelling was very hard although we could not hear the reports of the guns. We could see the flashes and see __ shell s going through the air. It was a splendid sight. There was a great deal of mortar firing. the long roll was sounded and we had everything ready to put in the wagons but did not load anything .
