May 5th Tuesday
A very dense fog in the morning after that cleared off the sun came out very hot. Went with the train to the front to give the brigade two days rations **found our corps had crossed at Banks ford they laid about half a mile form the river in a thick woods** of sugar coffee hard Bread and pork. The twenty third Regt was on picket. After the rations was issued the train went back to camp to get a days issue of fresh meat and a ration of whiskey for the men. Bill Miller and myself stayed out with the brigade I went to the company and got the names of the lost in the fight they are as following: Killed Wounded Sergt JJ Jones Corpl Ben Ross Private J Chamberlain ‘’ J McCarter ‘’ M Dickerson ‘’ Case ‘’ Sol Courtsight[?] Nelson Hardick[?] John Space Anarian[?] Drake
