January 1st 1863 Thursday.
We drilled about fifteen minutes in the morning. we drew a ration of whiskey. I sold mine for two postage stamps. for dinner we had baked beans boiled beans beef stake Coffee and hard tack. and hoe cake. In the afternoon Mart Kintner and myself took a walk out to white oak church. We saw officers and soldiers on horse back and afoot and a train of wagons. It seemed to be a regular thouroughfare [sic]. and we compared it to broad way new York. while we was out there we heard our drums beat for dress parade and we had to double quick to get in in time after dress parade we formed
