Reveille was sounded at three o’clock Am. Struck our tents and packed knapsacks and fell in line about five o’clock AM. Marched through Bakerville Centerville. Camped for the night on the west side of South Mountain in the vicinity of Cramptons Gap. Was mustered in the brigade in the afternoon by Aid. de Camp. H.P. Cook afterward went with John Trace The. Woodruff and C.C. Simpson across the mountain and was over the battle field. Saw the graves of a great many rebels and some Union men the trees and stumps were full of bullet holes. The distance marched today supposed to be about twelve miles. The day was quite warm and a great many had to fall to the rear. I was one of them Three men of the 23rd reported to have died from heat.
