May 23rd Monday
Clear and very warm today. The teams was hooked up about eight oclock in the morning but we did not get started until eleven at night. The whole army train passed through the town today. This has been a very nice town before the war but is nearly deserted now. The men are going through nearly every house. They have destroyed all of the old records in the courthouse, clerks and surrogates officer(?). I got a nice double barrel gun out of a store which I sold for fifteen dollars. Just at dark some of the men set fire to an old carriage shop and came near burning the whole town.
