It was not quite daylight yet. we marched very slow and rested often in the fore part of the day but we moved faster in the afternoon we came back the road that we went last Thursday as far as White oak church and then turned to the left and when we was near the church we received orders to load our guns. This is the first that we ever loaded our guns except when we was on picket at tennally town (which was Sept 2nd) we have marched through Maryland and part of Virginia with empty guns. It was very heavy and rapid some times. We arrived on the banks of the Rappahannock about two miles below Fredericksburg and near Falmouth about three o’clock PM. There is a battery right along the banks of the river and we lay just back of it. We rested a while and was then ordered to fall in and corss the river we marched down to the banks but there was so many ahead of us that we could not get across so we went back up on the banks where we was and was ordered to rest for the night. It had been smoky and a heavy fog all day but has cleared up about this time and we had no sooner got in this gully than a rebel battery opened fire upon us I suppose the brass battery that we passed but their shot fell short and some of them struck in the gully just where we were one man in the first was struck about the head and one of the twenty Third had both his jaws broken but no one in this regiment was hurt.
