It was very heavy and rapid some times. We arrived on the banks of the Rappahannock about two miles below Fredericksburg and near Falmouth about three o’clock PM. There is a battery right along the banks of the river and we lay just back of it. We rested a while and was then ordered to fall in and corss the river we marched down to the banks but there was so many ahead of us that we could not get across so we went back up on the banks where we was and was ordered to rest for the night.
