Between eight and nine oclock and while it was raining the hardest I've heard some very heavy cannonading. Issued two days rations and sold to officer in the morning. Ransome  came with the train and brought a saddle and bridle for Capt. Fith.It cost a hundred and fifty dollars and was bought and presented by the employees of the commissary dept. It was presented about eight oclock. All of the staff and the brigade band was present. It was presented by William J. Miller who made a neat and appropriate speech. I gave fifteen dollars toward it. It surpasses the saddle presented to Capt. Wheelan on the 29th of Sept. The presentation passed off very quietly and pleasantly. During last night an order carne for the men to carry only five days rations and the waggons to carry ten days rations of hard bread, coffee and sugar and salt.
