During last night an order carne for the men to carry only five days rations and the waggons to carry ten days rations of hard bread, coffee and sugar and salt. Soon after it commenced raining and continued at intervals all day. The troops got packed up but were ordered to pitch their tents again. Went back to Brandy Station and crossed the railroad about a mile above the station. After crossing the railroad went about half miie Stopped in an open field. Did not unhook the team. All of the guards that wa~ with the train was made t o stand post around the wagon. It is expected that we will be attacked by guerrillas. The roads are very bad ahead. There war a great lot of Sutler goods at the station. They war selling them as fast they could for they had no transportation for them. About ten oclock the teams was ordered to be unhooked and fed but no to take the harness off. We are attacked by the Rebels. Our guards loaded and fired three or four volleys which drove the rebs away from us but not until they had drove off the seond brigade cattle and killed the corporal of the guard. He belonged to the fifth Penn. He was shot just under the shoulder blade. After the rebs left us they attacked a cavalry train about three hundred yards from us and burnt ten wagons and captured a lot of mules and drivers. Crossed the rapid at Elyrford and river about half a mile from the park. Crossed on a pontoon bridge. After we got across we took a new road through the woods, after going about four miles we struck a plank road. Went about three miles on that then we turned to the right on a turnpike and went about five miles on that. The Plank road was the Chancellorsville and Fredericksburg road and the turnpike was the Gordonsville and Culpeper road. We passed through robinsonville. The roads are awful the most of the time tbe wheels war up to the hub. Got to our brigade about three oclock in the morning. As soon as we got through we started back. We could see plenty of rebel fires. Stopped when we got about two miles from the brigade and fed the teams.
