Issued one days ration of whiskey fresh meat coffee sugar bread. About six pm we got orders to go back to spring mills. Went very fast. when near westminister. stopped just long enough to feed and water the team while they was eating I went in the town and bought some fresh bread. After that parliament and I went a fishing in the mill pond. Par caught a very large eel and just as he got it!' upon the bank it broke the line and got in the pond again. About noon we got orders to go back to westmin ister again. Got there about one pm. Drew commissary stores at the depot and went out of town by the baltimore turnpike. Parked about one mile from the town and about a half a mile from the pike. There was from Eight to a thousand prisoners in town. This is a very nice town and the most of the people are true blue the streets are full of teams going each way. There was a great many drunken soldiers in the street they are disorderly and insulting to the woman. In the afternoon the supply train was ordered to the front with three days rations Lieut Bradford and Miller went out with it. About 4 pm the rest of the supply train with all the stores that we had was ordered to army headquarters. they go in charge of Capt. Fith and Johnny. In the afternoon there was a very hand shower there was some very large hail fell. Lieut Bradford and Miller got back today. They issued three days rations to the brigade. They say that the battle of Gettysburg has been the hardest one of this war. It exceeds antietam by far It is estimated that we have from Eight to twelve thousand prisoners Our Brigade was not engaged except a few as skirmishers. Lost one killed and three or four wouilded. The battle field is twenty five miles from here. General Meade had a horse sl1ot from under ilim The rebels thought that they was fighting green militia. They did not think that the army of the potomac had got up there yet the hospital wagons are all ordered to the front. This is the dullest fourth of July that i ever spent there is ilO demonstration whatever in town.
